What the Holy F Was That?!
A couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (the person Jennifer Lawrence is banging), mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in this riveting psychological thriller about love, devotion and sacrifice.
So Jennifer Lawrence made this movie with her current boyfriend and director, Darren Aronofsky. A reinvention of many religious tropes and retelling of several biblical stories, the whole concept has fallen flat on audiences who seem to have exclaimed, almost in unison, "What The F?" Well, cinemascore (and I) agree - and give it an "F".
Mother! stars Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a newlywed couple living in the middle of nowhere. Their marital bliss is interrupted when two unexpected guests — a man (Ed Harris) and his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) — arrive at their doorstep. What ensues is “Rosemary’s Baby amped up into a fugue state of self-indulgent solipsism,” EW’s Chris Nashawaty writes.
“I’ve been a fan, so once he told me the ideas floating around in his head I said yes,” Lawrence said of Aronofksy. “Then I got a script and when I read it I threw it across the room and told him he had severe psychological problems. But it’s a masterpiece.”
hahaha~! What the fuck ever. This is the worst piece of cinema I've sat through in a long time. I get it. It's a cute metaphorical tale of God and Mother Nature, with Adam and Eve and Kane and Abel rolled in. It just doesn't work. What is the yellow powder about? The bloody hole in the floorboards that reappear after being replaced? Nothing is concluded and we're just expected to move along with the shaky-cam back of headsoomed in shots while all hell breaks loose in the house.
The Bottom Line
